Course Description
This illustrated presentation will address key considerations for designing buildings with limestone trim and cladding, focusing on coursing, piece size, masonry openings, and ornamental detailing. While primarily centered on aesthetic issues, the presentation will also explore critical technical considerations to ensure designs that uphold the health, safety, and welfare of both occupants and the community. Visual examples will be used to highlight practical insights and best practices for working with limestone.
Learning Objectives
Understand the cultural and historical evolution of architectural uses for limestone.
Learn the steps, techniques and equipment used in the separate quarrying, fabrication and installation processes of limestone in order to most effectively utilize the material to develop well-considered detailing.
Understand the material characteristics of limestone in order to safely and soundly employ it for use for step and paving applications.
Understand the available back up and anchorage systems utilized in limestone cavity wall construction to employ its use to achieve durable and lasting exteriors.
