New Principles in Residential Design Using Operable Glass Walls

This course looks at the ways that opening glass walls changes the way people live in their home—and focuses on single family residential buildings that are predominantly built using wood framed construction. Large operable glass walls have emerged as a durable, flexible, and sustainable solution, particularly in residential situations where people are spending more time at home doing work, schooling, or other activities.

Learning Objectives

  • Determine the benefits and ways to incorporate the opening glass wall design principles into single family residential structures.

  • Identify and recognize the significance of how opening glass walls benefit occupants as they relate to residential design.

  • Review product choices and capabilities, configurations, and the technical aspects as they relate to residential design requirements.

  • Explain the welfare aspects of using opening glass walls that can elevate occupant lifestyle using natural daylighting, easier outdoor access, fresh air ventilation, and the expansion of space throughout the home.
